چکیده

HENNESSY, M. B., W. P. SMOTHERMAN AND S. LEVINE. Early olfactory enrichment enhances later consumption of novel substances. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 19(4) 481-483, 1977 . Male rats were exposed to conditions of either postweaning olfactory enrichment or standard laboratory rearing. In later tests, rats exposed to olfactory enrichment consumed more of novel substances (sucrose and milk) than did laboratory-reared controls. Animals presented with milk and then sucrose drank more of both substances than animals presented with the substances in the reverse order. The results suggest that the variety of odors to which the weanling rat is exposed affects its later preference for dietary variability.

Broad activation of the glomerular layer enhances subsequent olfactory responses.

Early olfactory experience with a specific odorant enhances the subsequent response of the glomerular layer of the rat olfactory bulb to that same odorant. Because different odorants activate different glomerular layer regions, it seemed plausible that experience with a large number of odorants might result in enhanced glomerular activation during subsequent exposure to both the previously expe...

Early olfactory experience induces structural changes in the primary olfactory center of an insect brain.

The antennal lobe (AL) is the first olfactory center of the insect brain and is constituted of different functional units, the glomeruli. In the AL, odors are coded as spatiotemporal patterns of glomerular activity. In honeybees, olfactory learning during early adulthood modifies neural activity in the AL on a long-term scale and also enhances later memory retention. By means of behavioral expe...

Environmental enrichment of young adult rats (Rattus norvegicus) in different sensory modalities has long-lasting effects on their ability to learn via specific sensory channels.

Sensory modalities individuals use to obtain information from the environment differ among conspecifics. The relative contributions of genetic divergence and environmental plasticity to this variance remain yet unclear. Numerous studies have shown that specific sensory enrichments or impoverishments at the postnatal stage can shape neural development, with potential lifelong effects. For specie...

Gene Expression Changes in the Olfactory Bulb of Mice Induced by Exposure to Diesel Exhaust Are Dependent on Animal Rearing Environment

There is an emerging concern that particulate air pollution increases the risk of cranial nerve disease onset. Small nanoparticles, mainly derived from diesel exhaust particles reach the olfactory bulb by their nasal depositions. It has been reported that diesel exhaust inhalation causes inflammation of the olfactory bulb and other brain regions. However, these toxicological studies have not ev...

Exogenous chemical substances in bird perception: a review

The perception of exogenous chemical substances, olfactory navigation and the use of the olfactory sense by birds to search for food are reviewed. Many results suggest that the olfactory sense is one of the important components of the navigation system in birds. The olfactory mechanisms used by homing pigeons to navigate homeward from distant sites have been well studied. The scent of potential...
